Keep the farm going in Mississippi

When a farmer retires, the land is only part of what's at stake. The market spot, the regular customers, the recipes and the name took years to build. Here, retiring farmers can hand those to someone starting out, and beginners can find a mentor.

Land, leases and legal help

Farm transfers usually need a lawyer, an accountant and a land-access group. These organizations arrange them:

Farmland Information Center
American Farmland Trust's guides to succession, leases, land access and state farm link programs.
National Young Farmers Coalition
Land access help and a network of young and beginning farmers.
USDA Beginning Farmers
USDA loans for buying a farm, and the local Service Center that handles them.
Farm Service Agency farm ownership loans
Direct and down-payment loans for beginning farmers buying land.
